A CPA's Oscar Moment

The accountant’s version of winning an Oscar: obtaining your CPA certification.  At least that’s what it feels like I have just experienced – my Oscar moment. It happened when the score releases came out on August 1st…

7/2/14 Week 12: Let’s get ready to rumble…Audit Exam style

Here it is the night before my 2nd attempt to Take Audit. Do I feel ready? Um…sure...no…are you supposed to feel ready? I mean really ready? This time tomorrow it will all be over and then the waiting game begins. I have been working quite a few hours between last week and this week, but I think I have also put forth quite a bit more effort with the Task Based Simulations this time.  40% of the exam…it’s kind of a big deal! My brain is chalk full of …

6/24/14 Week 11: Can I reschedule my audit exam date? Should I?

The big debate! I scheduled my exam for July 3rd. After studying not very much last week, I am feeling behind.  I know I have studied a lot in the past few weeks and everyone studies at a different pace. I think this week/weekend will really show if I am ready to take the exam on July 3rd. I need to keep my head down and really focus over the next few days! I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. Summoning the …

My Top 5 Tips to Pass the CPA Exam

As much as I hate stereotypes, I am writing a blog post for an accounting website. I am going to go out on a limb and make an assumption that my audience is type-A, loves making lists and organizing information (guilty, as charged!). As such, I am organizing some CPA exam study tips in a list form. These are tips that I wish I would’ve known when I first started…

How I Started Passing Sections of the CPA Exam

Everyone is different.  We all think and learn in slightly different ways.  The CPA Exam is a standardized test so while we are all required to learn the same material we can go about it in a slew of different ways.

I am going to talk about the formula that has worked for me and hopefully other people won't have to make the same mistakes I…

Secret Agent CPA Exam Candidate

Its 4:15 in the morning. You’re in your secret cave, mentally preparing to conquer the mission of successfully passing the CPA exam. Vigorously reviewing the op order (study material), while simultaneously taking notes. Deciphering the code is essential to the task at hand. Corpus, AMT, boot, NSTCG, LTCL, 1231, 1245 to name a few. Who can you call to guide you…

Going for Gold :-)

I felt compelled to title this post with a shout out to the Olympics! It's been nearly a year since I began my CPA journey. Having taken and passed 3 exams in 2013 I would have expected a little more enthusiasm and motivation on my part in studying for what I hope to be, my last exam. Unfortunately I saved the worst for last. A topic I absolutely despise, TAX.

The feelings this…

CPA Exam Materials

My collection of CPA Exam Materials are starting to remind me of a collection of home exercise videos. I buy them with the intention of using them regularly. The content being similar, but being explained or executed in various ways. It's really about finding the kind of method or medium that works for you.

I've used Becker Self-Study in the past and they've expired before I can get through the material from the time I purchased them, not actually from the time I installed them on my…

Order I am Taking the Exam

I completed FAR first because it was the toughest for me. I then took Audit because it was my strongest subject to support my morale. I took BEC afterwards and then studied for REG. I found out I was 3 points short from passing BEC. I continued to study REG because it is my weakest subject and I would hate procrastinate on passing if it comes to crunch time. I am pretty confident I will pass BEC the next go around.

Taking the CPA Exam as a Minority

I’m a minority. Not a religious/racial/ethic minority, but a minority on this website. I do not work in public accounting (gasp).

Here’s a little background on me. In undergrad I had two public accounting internships in a regional accounting firm’s audit department. Ultimately, after graduation, in May 2010, I got a job as an accountant for a manufacturing company. At the time, Michigan did not allow for people who were not in public accounting to obtain the experience requirement for…

No Longer Afraid of the Four-Headed Monster: The CPA Exam

Hello, I am a 30-something stay at home mom to three small and wonderful children 6, 4, 3. I began my CPA journey in the summer of 2012 when I receive my NTS from the state of Kentucky. I was nothing short of elated and immediately purchased study material from Yaeger for FAR and BEC. Shortly before receiving the material I began researching study tactics,…

The CPA M&M teddy bear

It's been since Dec 5th since I've looked at anything resembling  CPA exam study material.  I scheduled my Audit exam for Dec. 6th which meant postponing the start of our Xmas activities by no less than 4 weeks( Xmas begins the first week of Nov for me!) - a sacrifice that was…

FAR - It's the mindset...

Disclaimer: I still have two exams to go and only scored an 83 on the FAR exam. So by no means am I an expert on FAR. However, I can tell you this much - I would rather be studying FAR than Audit or Reg...

FAR is all about understanding the material. And one knows whether one understands the material or not. The trick is to understand what is it that the question is referring…

Study Like a Marathon

Recently, I reflected on how I could best pass the CPA exam.  I use an app called RunDouble and what I like about it is that I don't have to "think" about what to do - the training plan is built in and I can play the music on my phone simultaneously while I run around beautiful places in my neighborhood.

So, why not make a RunDouble feature for the CPA exam, I thought?…

Slow Start with Audit

It's been about 2 weeks now since I received my results on my last exam, FAR.  With the good news I began to study for Audit.  The first night went okay, I didn't really feel great about it but figured I just needed to get back into my groove.  But as the next week passed things were going from bad to worse.  Every time I attempted to read the text I'd doze off, shake myself awake and try again....still, something just wasn't working.  Nothing was clicking; it's difficult to explain but it…

Passing FAR

Hello fellow candidates!

After a long 3 week wait I received my score for FAR today.  Having checked the site throughout the day, I finally got my score at 10 min to 5.  After I clicked on "score" for the 20th time, I noticed that there were no red words; I gasped and quickly clicked on another tab exclaiming loudly "my score is there!!"  My coworkers were probably more excited that they wouldn't have to suffer through my complaining anymore about the scores not being…

Study Technique: My Way or the Review Course Way

I've always been an excellent student, but I also know that essays are my forte and MCQs are tricky for me only because I'm able to see many sides of the same coin (at least that's how my mother put it when I was younger and frustrated with MCQs).

Now that I'm preparing for standardized, uniform CPA exams, I find my nervousness and anxiety about MCQs getting the best of me to the point that I've tried to do my diligence in studying the subjects and topics inside and out.  But, that…

As I’ve delved into studying, I’ve developed a routine that I think many will find beneficial. I start with the audiovisual presentations. These provide me with a quick overview of the topics presented in each study unit. I prefer using the…

The day after my battle with FAR

Hello fellow candidates!  It was so nice to actually go to bed at a relatively normal time last night and actually get more than 5 hours of sleep!  Normally I would look at the clock and think "okay, I've got 3 hours until 12:30 (a.m.) should be able to get some good study time in."  It was 10:30 and I was like "YES!  I'm going to sleep NOW!!).  I know this won't last, but I'll enjoy while I can.  Then this morning on my way to work, instead of listening to Bill Grubbs from my Lambers audio,…
